My Take: A Chameleon-Like Word

Innovation. Scott Berkun, the author of the 2007 book The Myths of Innovation and now an innovation consultant, advises clients to ban the word at their companies. "It is a chameleon-like word to hide the lack of substance," he says.

Is your organization innovative? Do you deliver innovative products and/or services? Just about everyone says they do. I guess it depends on the use of the word which is probably why Mr. Berkun suggests banning the word.

And not all innovation is created equal. Clayton Christensen, a professor at Harvard Business School, classifies innovations into three types: efficiency innovations, which produce the same product more cheaply, such as automating credit checks; sustaining innovations, which turn good products into better ones, such as the hybrid car; and disruptive innovations, which transform expensive, complex products into affordable, simple ones, such as the shift from mainframe to personal computers.

CRM Reaches the Heart of Small Business
For years, we have been talking about the value of CRM for small business. Yet, the pundits of whatever, always have been publicly puzzled by what they thought was the slowness of small businesses to adopt CRM.  How dare they buck the trend that we were declaring! Admittedly, what we were talking about was more technology than strategy in their case, where when it came to the enterprise, it was more strategy than technology. That they were talking about, not what they were doing.    . . . read more >>

The New Sales Toolkit
For a sales rep chasing a lead, speed may be key, but functionality is just as—if not even more—essential. Software developers have had to grapple with the evolution to a mobile work environment, a trend that trickles into sales and marketing efforts, explains Rebecca Sprynczynatyk, director of product marketing for Infusionsoft, a maker of sales and marketing automation software that combines CRM, email marketing, and e-commerce solutions. The fundamentals remain the same, but the manner of doing business has become synced with Web innovation.    . . . read more >>
