I am an unabashed fan of the writings of Peggy Noonan. For me, her opinion pieces in the Wall Street Journal capture insights about the thinking of people from all walks of life about many different aspects of living. I want to start this week, indeed this year and decade, with a series of thoughts prompted from her most recent column - "Look Ahead with Stoicism - and Optimism."
As a preface, I want to personally wish you a Happy New Year. I like the way this year sounds - Twenty Ten. Say it out loud. It has a sense of strength. It sounds like the title of a good story. As Ms. Noonan points out, "We're at the clean start of a new decade." Time will tell what the story will be but the title has all the hope and excitement of a new movie release. Dare I say that it feels more powerful than 2000 - the transition from one millennium to another?
Most people I talk with note this last decade was not one of our best. But Ms. Noonan points out that it certainly wasn't the worst noting "the 30's started with the great Depression, featured the rise of Hitler and Stalin, and ended with World War II.
The recent past has not been the best but it hasn't been the worst. That is the platform for "stoicism and optimism." I will continue tomorrow. That's my take. Do you agree? What's your take?
