As we discuss the wisdom of baggage fees in the airline industry in the context of the bigger issue of unbundling the customer experience, I want to share with you a few different perspectives. While the comments may seem limited to the issue of baggage fees, let me urge you to consider the questions in the context of the bigger picture.
"Frankly, the baggage charge does not offend me as I almost always carry on my bags and if it means I don't have to pay more for my ticket to subsidize those who pack everything they own, that is OK with me."
On the other side: "And while I agree with you about not having to pay for others' overpacking, what really irks me about this particular fee is that it incents bad behavior. To save a buck more and more people are carrying luggage on when they would have checked a bag previously. So now, I have to be inconvenienced by the extra long security lines because more unchecked bags means slower security processing. And people who have no business carrying on luggage - elderly people, people with babies, people who bring too much with them are now wreaking havoc."
Lastly, one reader writes, "The luggage charge seems really shortsighted - not long ago, airlines ENCOURAGED people to check bags because they realized the glut of carry-ons was hampering turn-around times for their aircraft and affecting on-time performance. The airlines' biggest problem seems to be that they rush from perceived problem to perceived problem while never thinking about the customer." If the airlines were to start all over again with their fee structure, what would you ask them to do? Give me your take?

Article: The Matures Endure Remember the old TV commercial, “I’ve fallen and I can’t get up”? The catchphrase was at the core of a campaign for Life Alert, a device that signals paramedics of a person’s injury or compromising position. The commercials feature gray-haired actors portraying accident victims who thank the device-makers for saving their lives. The general attitude is one of helplessness, not self-sufficiency. Although the commercials can still be caught on TV from time to time—especially late at night and during reruns of Murder, She Wrote—it’s no longer a prime example of how to market to the oldest consumers, or “the Matures,” as they’re known.(DestinationCRM

Article: The Right Moves in White-Knuckle Times "Think units" is apt advice for succeeding in today's white-knuckle times. Without question, unit sales and the dollars they generate help keep firms afloat in a slow economy. But experience has taught us to pay attention to an additional unit of measure: loyalty-making time during a market ebb and how to invest it well. The right moves now can pay big loyalty-making dividends later. So resist the urge to make rash decisions that can alienate customers and come back to haunt you. Instead, slow down, take a deep breath and consider these six ways to invest your time well. (CustomerThink

News: Convergys Provides Relationship Management Support to the FDIC Convergys announced a new, five-year agreement to provide customer management support to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). The contract, with prime contractor Apptis, Inc., an IT services and solutions provider to the federal marketplace, stems from a significant increase in calls to (877) ASK-FDIC, the FDIC’s toll-free consumer assistance line, by concerned customers of the banking industry. The financial market turmoil, which has driven a huge increase in call volume at the FDIC Call Center, caused Apptis to seek a proven customer service leader able to quickly step in and provide support for the increased number of calls.(Convergys
