The number of emails of encouragement in response to the columns about perseverance and everything's gonna be all right has been so encouraging. The most common response has been to look at the situation from a "glass is half full" perspective.
Yes, that is the same glass that is half empty. Same glass, different perspective. But we need to look beyond the glass. It's not just perspective . . . it is also about action. One reader wrote: "Everyone is petrified, assuming the 'turtle position' in anticipation of something that might happen. Unfortunately the market seems to have riveted its collective focus on things that might happen. Companies I deal with had a good 2008 and a strong Q4. So far things aren't looking bad in Q1 but they are acting as if they are on the verge of bankruptcy. I'm afraid it will become a self-fulfilling prophesy."
I have written about the prudence of taking precautions - weathering the storm, if you will - but there is a big flaw in assuming precaution means inaction. Now is the time to take the next step to go from half full to full throttle.
