8/18/06 - Conferences - Keep it Fresh I came to work this morning to find a voicemail message from a colleague that works directly with one of the conferences. Her message was one of concern that I would be so bold as to say such things about conferences. Let me be as clear as possible. I am a big fan of good conferences. As you may realize, we help promote many, if not most, of the industry's conferences and major events. I personally attend a fair number of them. My point, echoed by many of you readers, is that conferences organizers better understand what attendees find valuable. Specifically, if your conference features many of the same speakers as the last conference, you may be in trouble. If you can't clearly articulate "what's new" and "why you should attend," you may be in trouble. If it's not clear why attending a conference is better than the alternatives, you might be in trouble. Conference organizers: keep it valuable, keep it fresh. That may mean doing something different. Gary Lemke, Publisher (Share your thoughts)
