8/17/06 - Why Conferences Are Shrinking Yesterday I shared my observations about the incredibly shrinking conferences and I asked you why you think less people are attending. I'll summarize your responses today. Before I do, let me be clear that I'm talking about conferences in general rather than any specific conference. Some of the most popular reasons stated include: 1) recycled speakers and content (same people saying the same thing); 2) travel restrictions (budget, fears); 3) the Internet as an alternative source of information; 4) less likely to see high level people; 5) nothing new to learn about; 6) industry consolidation (fewer vendors), and; 8) costs too much. For conference managers, here's a bit of free research. People are saying that they have alternatives to attending a conference. To be the viable alternative, conferences have to be seen as having a better value than those other alternatives. More on this tomorrow. Gary Lemke, Publisher (Share your thoughts)
