Convergys Keeps Pasig Schoolchildren Reading

(Cincinnati and Manila; January 17, 2008) - Convergys Corporation (NYSE: CVG), the global leader in relationship management, has concluded a month-long reading program that gave over 2,200 public school students in Pasig a chance to broaden their minds. Conducted through Sa Aklat Sisikat (SAS) Foundation, Convergys turned over some of the best Filipino children’s storybooks in mobile reading carts for Liberato Damian Elementary School, Sagad Elementary School, Nagpayong Elementary School, and Pinagbuhatan Elementary School.

Grade 4 students of these schools participated in a 31-day SAS Reading Program where they read 60 popular titles and engaged in various activities for reading comprehension. Teachers were previously trained in creative teaching strategies in line with the program.

Students took to the books immediately, especially enjoying dual language books that told their stories in both Filipino and English. The children eventually produced a gallery of art works inspired by their storybook readings. Each school made dramatic presentations as part of the program’s culminating activity.

Marvin David, a participating student from Pinagbuhatan Elementary School, offered his storytelling skills with “Laon and the Seven-Headed Dragon,” one of the selected titles of the program. He is currently the National Capital Region champion for children’s storytelling and encouraged by the program, will compete against other regional finalists in the national competitions.

“Your smiles and cheers for the reading program make it one of our most worthwhile projects,” said Marife Zamora, Convergys Vice-President and Country Manager, to the children during the recent culminating activity. Zamora continued, “Corporate social responsibility is among Convergys’ core values and it is our pleasure to help develop a nation of readers. May we all become better readers and learners.”

Convergys employees worked as volunteers throughout the reading program, assisting teachers in all four schools and helping oversee the project.

With the turnover of these mobile libraries to each school, students from other grade levels will now be able to enjoy the storybooks as well.
